German grammar - the difference between ( Vor - Seit ) with examples

 The difference between vor and seit in German is that vor refers to an event or period of time that was prior and has ended, while seit refers to an event or period of time that was prior and is still ongoing.

Examples of using vor:

Ich bin vor einem Jahr nach Deutschland gekommen.

(I came to Germany a year ago.)

Das Buch ist vor zwei Wochen erschienen.

(The book came out two weeks ago.)

Example of using seit:

Ich wohne seit zehn Jahren in Deutschland.

(I've been living in Germany for ten years.)

Ich arbeite seit fünf Jahren in dieser Firma.

(I have been working at this company for five years.)

Ich habe vor einem Jahr Deutsch gelernt. 

(I learned German a year ago.)

Ich lerne Deutsch seit einem Jahr.

(I've been learning German for a year.)

Ich war vor fünf Jahren in Deutschland. 

(I was in Germany five years ago.)

Ich bin seit fünf Jahren in Deutschland. 

(I've been in Germany for five years.)

After the temporal prepositions “vor” and “seit” comes the dative.

After “seit” you can mention a date, month or year.

„sit dem 5. Mai“, „sit 2014“, „sit Mai“

. It is permissible to mention: “seit gestern”.
